Construction Graduate to Graphic Designer Part 1

Quick Background - About Me

Name: Adeel Ahmad

Age: 26

Location: London, UK

Education: BSc (HONs) Building Surverying

I graduated in Building Surveying just over 2 years ago. I tried my best to find a career in construction but given the economic climate the UK was facing, find a career job in my field of study was near close to impossible. I used to design a lot when I was younger, creating 3D Models, text and special effects. So if I ever wanted to get a change in career it would ideally be in design.

Green Bird Media Production Project

I wanted to make material that was pleasing to the eye, easy to learn but most importantly, educational - Islamically. Not many people have  the time or the interest in sitting hours upon hours listening to lectures, and some people just need that extra motivation. Also not ignoring the fact that today's media is not justifying the true Islamic message, there is alot of propaganda, speculation and doubt aimed at us. Insha'Allah this is an effort, even though small, in helping to rectify our image.

I felt I had to do something for Islam, I didn't want to spend my life not achieving anything or not helping the Ummah. I need something that I could look back on and say "Alhamdullilah", I have done this for the sake of Allah SWT. I felt at present this is the most productive thing I could do. My primary intention was and still is to inspire as many people as I can. If I could inspire one person and he/she could then inspire others, and so forth creating a network from a chain reaction, then I have achieved what I initially intended for.

The Name

I wanted a name people could remember, a name that was unique in its own right, and Alhamdullilah Green Bird appealed to me alot. I didn't have a selection to choose from, this kind of popped up straight away.

Check out Part 2, Insha'Allah

Losing A Loved One Poem

Losing A Loved One Poem

A collaboration with Tasnim Nazeer

An Introduction to "Losing A Loved One" Author - Tasnim Nazeer

I was approached by Tasnim Nazeer during the early days of GBMP project and wasn't expecting someone of her calibre to contact me. She is a free-lance journalist and writes for CNN, Al Jazeera and Huffington Post, and was also shortlisted for Asian Women of Achievement in Media 2012.

You can follow her on twitter (@tasnimnazeer1)

Tasnim contacted me and wanted a visual representation of a poem she wrote. She wanted something that would be visually attractive/beautiful to sustain the audience's attention. She gave me the freedom to be creative.

Losing A Loved One Design

For, Losing A Loved One, I wanted to create the feeling that the viewer would be travelling on a journey. I initially thought of using a line (timeline) and have animations coming in from that, I then thought there's only so much you can do with a line going across a page, so that went out of the window!

So I decided to go with the feature of having images animate as the words come in, while also having it moving a way from the viewer. I felt this was an ideal way the viewer could see events unfold while feel like they're on a journey and in between have Qur'an verses recited. This added that uniquenss and emphasis on the message Tasnim and I wanted to get across.

Testimonial "This is really beautiful! I couldn't stop crying..."
